Borrowed Brother XR7700 Sewing Machine 1st: Sewed one inch OK; moved fabric and it stopped sewing, motor made thudding noise. It could probably be bent somehow. You should replace it first because that also can confuse the sensor causing that error.regards. So, I was sewing along and heard a thump.kind of sounded like a louder version of what you hear when the needle hits a pin.but I wasn't using pins.
This, of course, lead to the thread jamming so I had to clear that. When rethreading I pulled out the bobbin case to make sure it was seated correctly and found a kind of 'v' shaped piece of wire (about the width of a paper clip I guess) sitting loose under the bobbin case.
I took it out and threw it away. Still can't pull up the bobbin threa That part was the hook end of the spring that was supposed to put tension on the bobbin - it will have to be replaced. This is a special flat spring that unfortunately only a repair shop of a dealer has it - you will have to take your machine to one. Our beautiful Bernina 730 sewing machine has been stored in the garage in its original case, and that wrapped in plastic, for a few years now.

Temperatures have been both hot and cold in the garage, but the environment was dust-free. We have brought the Bernina in, set it up, oiled it as specified in the manual, with the original sewing machine oil. We have correctly threaded the machine and the bobbin thread is up. The thread is so heavy that I had to put some pressure just to get it undone. This happen a few times and then I found it wasn't sewing at all. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit. QUICK SUMMARY FIRST: Ensure sharp new needle, Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint Set Top Tesion to 4.then. Balance Bobbin to suit. TOP THREAD TENSION: If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one! TOP TENSION & GUIDES: Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp. It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.
If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread. Now, with a 2' (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10' (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with a see saw / to and fro action.
In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to disengage tension plates). Do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.
BOBBIN TENSION: Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a 'false' tension. I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean the hook race area (where bobbin case sits).this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin.
Just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst. Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits.oil and lint combine to conspire against you. Adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn. Needle breakage can mean that you don't have the needle inserted correctly, you have the wrong size needle for the machine, you are pulling the fabric instead of letting the machine take it on it's own.
Thread coming off the needle is usually operator error. Make sure you grasp both threads as you start your seam. Also if you are certain your needle is correct for this machine.
Take it in for servicing by a pro. It is likely that the needle is striking something and breaking. That means it's out of time. Or perhaps a bent part. Dec 30, 2012. Basically on any sewing machine to time it you will need to separate the two gears that drive the hook.
Usually loosen the set screws that attach the gear to the shaft and separate them. Time the hook first. On center needle position, set the hook so that the point is behind the needle when the needle bar has risen about 2.5mm.
2) Set the needle bar height. Choose the needle position which is the last for the hook to pass. (Left on most machines, right on older Vikings) At this point, place the point of the hook behind the needle and set the needle bar height so that top of the eye is just barely below the tip of the hook. 3) Check feed timing.
Set the stitch length to the longest stitch. The needle should enter the fabric just as the teeth drop below the surface of the plate.
